Installation guide crank skins

Nederlandse instructies hier beschikbaar →

Select your crankset below to see the exact installation steps. Follow our guide for a smooth, hassle-free install.

WRAPPING TIPS:

  1. Make sure your crank is clean and completely grease-free. Wash it first with a bit of dish soap, dry it with a clean cloth, then degrease using the included alcohol wipe. The better the prep, the better the wrap will stick.
  2. All pieces are already neatly pre-cut on the sheet. Start by removing the smaller pieces and cut-outs first (for example around bolts or details). That makes applying the rest much easier.
  3. Follow the numbers on the sheet to apply the crank skin step by step. You’ll also find a visual placement guide below to help you line everything up.
  4. While applying, you might stretch the film a bit too much. No stress. Gently warming the film with a hairdryer will let it shrink back to its original shape.
  5. Do small wrinkles show up during installation? No worries. A bit of heat will help the film shrink around the crank, and you can carefully push them out with your nail or a bank card. Just be careful with bigger wrinkles, avoid folding the film onto itself.

Estimated install time: ±30 minutes

What you’ll need (Set everything up before you start, trust us)

Included in the kit:

  • Pre-cut PPF crank skins
  • Squeegee
  • 2× isopropyl alcohol wipes

You’ll need yourself:

  • Spray bottle (±500 ml)
  • Tap water (demineralised if possible)
  • Baby shampoo (preferred) or dish soap (no hand cream, no lotion)
  • Clean microfiber cloth
  • A small dose of patience (yes, really)

Prep step 1 – Make your slip solution (Required for a proper install)

PPF is installed wet.
No slip solution = no correct positioning.

Mix:

  • 500 ml water
  • 2–3 drops baby shampoo or dish soap
No more. Too much soap = the film won’t stick.
  • Shake that bottle, baby!

Prep step 2 – Prep your crank

  • Optional: remove the crank from the bike (strongly recommended for best results)
  • Clean the crank first with a bit of dish soap. Dry with a clean cloth.
  • Degrease thoroughly using the included isopropyl wipes
  • Make sure the surface is completely dry and grease-free (the alcohol evaporates on its own in seconds)
  • Wash your hands or wear nitrile gloves

Skip this and you won’t have a clean result…

Installation:

All PPF pieces are pre-cut and numbered on the sheet. Follow the numbers to install each piece in the correct order. Below, you’ll find a visual placement guide for your crank model.

Step 1 – Wet everything

Spray plenty of slip solution on:

  • The crank surface
  • The adhesive side of the PPF piece you’re about to install (after removing it from the backing paper)

The film should slide freely.

Step 2 – Position

  • Place the correct numbered PPF piece on the crank
  • Gently slide it into its exact position
  • Line up edges and contours first
  • Don’t press it down yet

Step 3 – Lock it in

  • Start in the center of the piece
  • Use the included squeegee
  1. Work your way outwards
  2. Push water and air out from under the film
  3. Use steady, controlled pressure. No brute force.

Step 4 – Finish the edges

Pay extra attention to:

Edges

  • Never squeegee into an edge
  • Always move from the center outward
  • Guide water, dirt, and air bubbles away from the film

Curves & shapes

  • Follow the curve with light pressure
  • Push everything outward as you go

You can lightly press everything down with a microfiber cloth afterward.

Edge not sticking? → Gently lift it, spray a bit more slip solution, and reapply.

After installation (very important)

Let the crank dry for at least 12–24 hours

  • Don’t ride
  • Don’t wash
  • Don’t touch

A slight haze or tiny bubbles are normal and will disappear while curing

Common mistakes (avoid these)

❌ Not enough slip solution
❌ Too much soap
❌ Rushing the install
❌ Not pressing down the edges properly
❌ Installing and riding immediately

PPF needs time. That’s normal.

Care & durability

  • Fully cured after ±48 hours
  • Washable like a normal crank
  • Built to handle and protect against dirt, water, stone chips, scratches, small dents, crash damage, transport abuse and all the other ways your cranks take a beating
